Garage Door Spring Repair
Precise counterbalance adjustments for intact springs and unevenly lifting doors.
View detailsCorrectly matched replacement springs restore safe lifting after a spring failure.

A broken garage door spring removes the counterweight that allows a sectional door to move safely. The opener may still make noise, but it should not be used to lift the full weight of the door. Replacement begins by matching the new springs to the door rather than copying only what is visible. Door weight, height, drum type, shaft, cable arrangement, and the required lift are considered so the finished door is balanced from the floor to the open position.
A spring should be replaced when it is broken, badly pitted, incorrectly specified, or unable to balance the door. Changing a matched pair can be practical where both springs have the same duty history, while a single-spring setup requires a replacement selected for the actual door. A properly matched spring protects the operator, but it cannot correct warped panels or binding tracks.
Work through the symptom first — some of these turn out to need no technician at all.
Each opening and closing flexes spring steel. Eventually the wire reaches fatigue failure, often without a gradual warning before it breaks.
Low temperature changes steel dimensions slightly and exposes fatigue that was already present. Cold is a common time for a marginal spring to let go.
Moisture and road residue can attack coils and end fittings. Pitting reduces the cross-section of the wire and can shorten service life.
A spring chosen without a door weight calculation can run with too much or too little torque. That affects balance, cables, opener load, and the spring's working life.
Climate normals for the nearest full-service station show about 45 snowy days each year for the Oakville area. More winter cycles can mean more trips through a cold garage, and a spring may fail at the first lift of the day after a severe overnight freeze. That timing does not make snow the cause by itself; it is usually the point at which accumulated metal fatigue becomes visible.
Never treat a spring change as a home project. Torsion springs are under extreme tension, and extension springs can recoil if their containment hardware is missing or compromised. Do not loosen winding-cone screws, touch a loaded cable, or use a drill bit, screwdriver, or pipe as a winding bar. Keep the opener disengaged until the counterbalance is restored.
The door is kept secured before the lift system is touched. The operator is not used as a support for a door whose counterbalance has failed.
Spring dimensions and door characteristics are recorded. On a two-spring torsion system, both springs are considered because they have operated through the same number of cycles.
New components are fitted to the shaft or extension arrangement with the door restrained. Torsion springs are wound using proper winding bars and the cable path is set evenly on both sides.
The completed door is checked at several heights, then its operator limits and safety functions are verified. A replacement is complete only when the door is stable and moves without excessive drive force.
